When I create a new document and i choose Arial, I can typing apostrophe.
When I import a Word Document the apostrophe aren't correct but if I
type a new sentence in this document the apostrophe are correct.

I make test to open the same document with Abiword and the result is correct.
I did not have the problem with OpenOffice 1.0.x
Do you actually have Arial installed? Maybe OOo is substituting another
font that does not have that character.
