Hi think that I solved the problem. It was related to my fonts. I found this error in my XFree logs:
FreeType: couldn't open face /var/lib/defoma/x-ttcidfont-conf.d/dirs/TrueType/Arial.ttf: 1 This ttf file and a few others listed in the 'fonts.dir' were effectively missing. After linking them from /usr/share/fonts/truetype/, I was able to start openoffice1.1. I guess that I will have to clean my font directories :-( Sorry for the inconvenience. Stephane.
