I worked around this, for Quanta which also doesn't start quickly enough under Gnome (since it has to start most of KDE...) In /etc/gdm/Sessions/Gnome, I changed the definition of gnomesession to: gnomesession="/usr/bin/gnome-session --purge-delay=60000" which allows 60 seconds before giving up, rather than the default of 30. TBH I can't see any particular reason this value isn't set to 300 seconds, but the Gnome maintainers don't seem to want to do that. AFAICS session management can have some value, and I was somehwat disappointed to see my bug against gnome-session discarded.
