I filed a bug against openoffice, and I'm afraid I was wrong (but not sure). Some dead-key french inputting does not work. Since it works for emacs, balsa, etc, maybe it is a debian packaging problem. It seems to be the same kind of problem than already appeared for Brazilian, and is indeed fixed by setting LC_ALL.
