I am using Debian unstable on different machines and I have no
problems with Kontact, KMail, or Akonadi. I am using the MySQL/MariaDB
backend and IMAP, SMTP, CalDAV, and CardDAV Akonadi agents. Debian
package versions are mostly 4:19.08.3-1 here.
