Hello HPPA community, I managed to install debian 8.0 on my HP C3750. Oh boy I almost forgot how entangling IPL can be... and the disk partitioning...
anyway, here is the result: uname -a Linux rocky 3.16.0-4-parisc64-smp #1 SMP Debian 3.16.7-ckt4-3 (2015-02-03) parisc64 GNU/Linux cat /proc/cpuinfo processor : 0 cpu family : PA-RISC 2.0 cpu : PA8700 (PCX-W2) cpu MHz : 875.000000 capabilities : os32 os64 iopdir_fdc nva_supported (0x07) model : 9000/785/C3750 model name : Allegro W2 hversion : 0x00005dc0 sversion : 0x00000481 I-cache : 768 KB D-cache : 1536 KB (WB, direct mapped) ITLB entries : 240 DTLB entries : 240 - shared with ITLB bogomips : 1744.89 software id : 2000777092 cat /proc/meminfo MemTotal: 8235392 kB MemFree: 8095336 kB MemAvailable: 8148944 kB Buffers: 12844 kB Cached: 75680 kB SwapCached: 0 kB Active: 59884 kB Inactive: 48648 kB Active(anon): 20268 kB Inactive(anon): 8632 kB Active(file): 39616 kB Inactive(file): 40016 kB Unevictable: 0 kB Mlocked: 0 kB SwapTotal: 1366012 kB SwapFree: 1366012 kB Dirty: 0 kB Writeback: 0 kB AnonPages: 20000 kB Mapped: 30744 kB Shmem: 8900 kB Slab: 14740 kB SReclaimable: 5292 kB SUnreclaim: 9448 kB KernelStack: 1632 kB PageTables: 3216 kB NFS_Unstable: 0 kB Bounce: 0 kB WritebackTmp: 0 kB CommitLimit: 5483708 kB Committed_AS: 196368 kB VmallocTotal: 1032160 kB VmallocUsed: 5568 kB VmallocChunk: 1011568 kB Ok, I have added ftp.ports.debian.org/debian-ports to my apt sources.list file and installed the key. So far so good, I can search packages and install them. But... I installed the system with kde desktop. When I try to "apt-get install something", aptitude is trying to remove around 350 packages, most of them are kde or xserver related. I have a few questions, perhaps more debian related than hppa related... sorry I come from slackware linux... - is there a way to "lock" installed packages so aptitude won't ask me to remove them? - is there a package browser (similar to https://packages.debian.org/jessie/ )? - although I haven't tried it yet, does X environment work with the integrated video card? I remember reading something that with linux/hppa graphics didn't work. thank you all for the enormous and amazing effort. regards Paolo
