apt-get: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6: undefined symbol: _ZNSt8messagesIcE2idE, version GLIBCXX_3.4 This system tracks unstable but had been off, and trying to install something pulled in a new libstdc++6 w/o first upgrading libc6, which was at version 2.10.2-9. This bug seems similar to #584572, except with newer versions. I fixed the problem here my manually upgrading libc6 with dpkg. So, there must be a badly versioned dependency. -- see shy jo
