Step one would be to find out exactly how to reproduce the
segfault. Without that it is extremely hard to found out.

Then, since this is a segmentation fault, one would probably need to
use GDB to examine the problem further. All rather involved if one
does not know both C and the internals of emacs well.

On the other hand, if you can reduce the problem to something simple
and reproducible, you could post it to the gnu.emacs.bugs newsgroup.
There will be a good probability that somebody will know or at least
care about it.

You are right that it is not likely that it is a segmentation fault in
a subprocess you are seeing. If a subprocess dies, it only affects
that process (allthough the sudden loss of it may in theory provoke
another problem inside emacs).

Emacs21 is not completely stable. I also experience segmentation
faults from time to time. Not enough to really bother me, but it
happens.
