You should write
(setq auto-mode-alist
(cons '("\\.html$" . html-helper-mode) auto-mode-alist))
instead of
(setq auto-mode-alist (cons '("\.html$" . html-helper-mode)
auto-mode-alist))
but that's not a problem that can cause your error.
