To ease the selection of a color palette, Cynthia Brewer's [colorbrewer] is a helpful tool, in particular if there are only a few discrete levels of colors to consider. Inkscape (an editor selected here because results can be exported to .svg) provides an adjustable individual preview among its filters (in the GUI, see filters -> color -> color blindness).
