Err. I'm sorry to contradict you but that's not currently true.
Storing the upstream *tag* is #1110269. We do archive the upstream
*commits*.
I don't think #1110269 is a precondition for ending the tag2upload beta
and IMO it shouldn't be a blocker for people adopting tag2upload.
But if there is so much effort available to actually work on
improvements to our git publication systems, then we would welcome
someone else working on #1110269.
