That section of DevRef links to https://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ch-controlfields.html#special-version-conventions , where the "Stable updates" section explains when each would be used. It's not really a case of which is preferred. The two conventions are used in different circumstances, and the one that is appropriate should be used. Regards, Adam
