Debian uses the mainline Linux kernel, so it can only support the Pi 5
if and when support for it lands there. Some extra steps might be needed
then (e.g. bootloader support via some raspi-firmware update, maybe some
other firmware packages for Wi-Fi support, etc.).

Maybe we'll get some support with the Trixie kernel (v6.12 series), in
which case we could envision building Debian 12 images using a Linux
kernel from bookworm-backports (maybe with the few other packages
alluded to above). But getting a Trixie image to build and work on the
Pi 5 would be the very first step (before trying to hack up a Bookworm
+ bits of Trixie image).

If the Trixie kernel doesn't really support that model, hopes would
then concentrate on having a Trixie image with bits of Forky instead.

Looking into that particular topic, alongside with resuming regular
builds (for earlier models), has been on my todo list all of last year.
I hope to get that done in the near future (either before Trixie gets
released or shortly after), but my focus is on debian-installer right
now.

Pointers:

You'll find some hindsight about upstream support by Rafael Diniz
and Daniel Moran in the first one.

Cheers,
