I hope to land that package-split in the not too distant future.

Just be aware that you you will likely have to move files from / to
/usr for the merged-/usr transition during the trixie release cycle
as well. That might become slightly more complicated if you also
split the package.

(I'm not saying it can't be done, just that it might be less
straight forward and require some extra care.)
