I fully support: - upstreams dropping years from copyright notices - Debian not requiring maintainers to preserve years in debian/copyright files.

In theory, I agree with you. In practice, copyright lengths are so long in many countries that software effectively never enters the public domain (at least not while it is still of useful/non-historical value).
