Yes a brand is involved, but I don't think it hinders what is requested
here:

PureOS distributed for a time¹ the Mozilla-based web browser under the
Firefox brand², and explicitly asked and received confirmation from
Mozilla that the kinds of changes done to the Mozilla codebase did _not_
violate the terms of brand use.

The changes done involved removal of hidden system addons, change of
search engine, and reduced tracking.

All changes are here (topmost ~23 commits):
https://source.puri.sm/pureos/packages/firefox-esr/-/commits/pureos/esr60/master/

I tried upstream one of those patches to Debian, but it has lingered
since October 2018 in the Debian BTS with no comment from the package
maintainer: https://bugs.debian.org/884600

What I think is the real issue here is not the Mozilla brand, but
instead that the Mozilla codebase is quite big and the maintainer has
chosen to maintain as few Debian-specific pathes as possible.

I therefore recommend that we shift from "we either accept all Mozilla
design choices or we take the burden of a confusing rebranding" to "how
minimally and easily maintainable patches are possible to compose and
can we convince our maintainer to apply them".

¹ PureOS has since then shifted to use GNOME Web a.k.a. Epiphany as its
default web browser, and nowadays distribute Debian-packaged Firefox-ESR
unaltered.

² Prior to that, PureOS distributed a rebranded Mozilla-based browser,
but that's irrelevant for the point made here.
