It maintains the appearance of a hardware audio mixing desk. It can set levels, balance, mute, etc through the interface or via MIDI. The original jack-mixer was removed from Debian for being Python2 only and depending on pygtk. This fork has been updated to Python3 and removed the pygtk dependency. It will be maintained under the Python team.
