I think this is something that should be discussed with upstream developers of display/login managers, etc. Changing the location from user's home directories to a system directory has a security impact that needs careful consideration. Further, for some, the right place would be somewhere like LDAP instead. In any case, such changes would seem to me to be beyond what Debian does: we package software and integrate it into a working system, rather than making fundamental changes to functionality like this. -- I want to build worthwhile things that might last. --joeyh
