Nagios' author did create Nagios Enterprise to provide paid support and
integration to Nagios. This triggered a fork (Icinga) by Netways, a
competing business. This created some frictions with both Nagios' author
and the community. However, Nagios' author also started to refuse
enhancements to Nagios and made several threats to its own
community. This triggered other forks, Shinken being among one of them.
I thought this was covered by LWN at the time, but I am unable to find a
link.
