Starting from version 219, it's not, at least on btrfs. The culprit is FS_NOCOW, used intentionally for a minor speed increase. It does break all backup schemes that rely on btrfs functionality (same-disk snapshots, btrfs-send/receive). Besides breaking CoW, it also degrades behaviour for unclean shutdowns.
