A common case is that upstream will only support their latest and greatest version, which is nearly a guarantee that Debian stable will never have an upstream-supported package. Many upstreams suggest that you update to their latest and greates version before you even try talking to them. In addition, there are even some upstreams that consider Debian's packages of their software broken because we dare to add patches or to link to SSL libraries that this software can be linked to be upstream doesn't like.
