Yes, this. Debian's defaults are never going to please everyone, because you can't default to GNOME, KDE, XFCE, LXDE, fvwm, awesome, ratpoison etc. all at the same time; but they can at least be good for people who don't know which they prefer, because those people are reliant on the default.
