I have adopted this a little self-ironic description from the meta
package mate-desktop-environment that has been provided on the
upstream package site so far [1].

If you feel we should change that, please file a bug report against
that package in Debian.

Being "self-ironic" is not a service to our users, who might be
interested in a traditional, lightweight desktop environment (and
will not choose to suffer with a "non-intuitive and unattractive"
solution instead).

A fix for it has been uploaded just now.

The new LONG_DESCRIPTIONs start with:

"""
The MATE Desktop Environment is the continuation of GNOME 2. It provides an
intuitive and attractive desktop environment using traditional metaphors for
Linux and other Unix-like operating systems.
 .
MATE is under active development to add support for new technologies while
 preserving a traditional desktop experience.
