Earlier in the thread, Reimar Doffinger (who last I knew was one of the MPlayer developers, and I think one of the FFmpeg ones as well) said that he would be happy to help, to a limited degree, with making MPlayer work with libav. This seems to imply that currently it does not. > The problem with mplayer is that it hasn't seen an upload since two > years. According to John Paul Adrian Glaubitz earlier in the thread, MPlayer has had an upstream release this past May. If the Debian package hasn't been updated with that release, that's not upstream's fault, nor a problem with MPlayer itself. I can testify that current MPlayer works with current FFmpeg, because I build and install both of them locally from the VCS. I'm guessing that the lack of updates to the MPlayer package(s) is exactly because of the FFmpeg/libav split, and the resulting lack of FFmpeg packages in Debian for the updated MPlayer to depend on. > If people really need mencoder, the mplayer source package could be > modified so that it only builds mencoder. As I understand matters, MEncoder is no longer officially maintained upstream, and the MPlayer developers recommend using FFmpeg instead. People still use MEncoder anyway, because there are things it can do that FFmpeg can't do yet, but there aren't very many such things anymore. In any case, wouldn't this be more work than updating the MPlayer package(s) to use the current upstream release? - -- The Wanderer Secrecy is the beginning of tyranny.
