Non-Geeks are probably not aware that a system holds many packages of software that expects to be able to deliver status messages as e-mail via either /usr/lib/sendmail or tcp port 25 to localhost. Geeks might be aware that there is relatively few software that can accept e-mail messages by one of this means and is able to queue such messages in case the real target is unavailable for some reason and that is not called MTA.
