It would have been wrong if it was the *only* course of action that I did. Which was not. I mailed the old maintainer, waited for a long time, then finally asked the QA team to orphan the package, which is what is currently required. The mail to -devel was just an extra precaution, but (with all due respect) seeing the kind of reaction like yours, probably, I shouldn't have do it at all...
