There was a thread about this back in 2008: https://lists.debian.org/debian-publicity/2008/12/threads.html#00021 My personal conclusion back then was that the font had been illegally relicensed to the GPL. There were also indications of glyphs taken from proprietary fonts, GPL <> Bitstream license incompatibility and also non-free license clauses.
