Wont help much I'm afraid; people wont have a clue that they should be checking the suggests of libpoppler. It would be slightly more easy for users to see it against evince, but still not ideal. A good solution for lenny+1 would be to bubble up the errors of xpdf/poppler when they fail converting PDFs or displaying them due to lack of data, and offering to install the missing packages.
