By "fix" you mean rewrite the history, it appears. The end result would be the same either way. I think both you and Ian are making a mountain out of a molehill here. So what if the history isn't pretty? It won't impact anybody running dpkg. It likely won't even impact the people hacking on dpkg. In fact, 2 years hence, I bet nobody cares.
