I thought it was basic knowledge what menu files are and what desktop
files are.
For menu files, read /usr/share/doc/menu/ for details

Menu files is a debian internal format for menu entries. desktop files
is a fdo specification that does more or less the same, but in a
different way.
A while back when the menu system was last under major discussion, It was
suggested that the menu system be changed in the long term.
The idea is that the desktops that support Desktop files only use those
files, and ignore the Debian menu system completely. (Although the files
would need to conform to a new Menu policy).
The Destop systems not supporting Desktop files would continue to use the
Debian menu system. The menu system would support desktop files as an imput
format.
Obviously there would be a significant transitioning period. During which
all desktops would need to continue to use the menu system, and the system
needing to accept both types of input.
What ever happened to that? Is that by chance what you are working on? (The
script you are writing would be an important part of the transition.)
