My logic is correct; apparently my understanding of the goals of the Debian project is not. I always thought it was first and foremost for the devs themselves ("we don't care if anybody uses it but us"). Under that reasoning, I'd think you'd *want* to spend money to have the best for yourselves. The second and lesser reason is as a benefit for society -- thus the comparision to the orgs you say are not like Debian at all. But primarily I would have thought you'd really want to have the best environment in the world. I'm not saying you don't want that, I just didn't realize $30 would be a showstopper, especially since as you say you are already contributing so much.
