Hi,
Firstly, a violation of a SHOULD directive in policy is a
bug. Policy defines what the meaning of must, should, and may is in
the context of policy, and developers are supposed to have
familiarized themselves with Debian policy.
Secondly, Debian policy trumps the LSB, as far as Debian
packages are concerned. If there is a conflict, packages need to
follow policy first. While is is desirable to follow the directives
of the LSB, we have not yet committed to o so when it conflicts wioth
thte way debian currently works.
Thirdly, there is a reason that init scripts should be silent
when the package is removed but not purged; since init scripts are
conffiles, and remain on the system after removal; unnecessary
chatter from these scripts is distrcting to the end user, and there
is no need to inform him; since the package removal was done at the
request of the admin.
I am sending this bug back to nullmailer (violating policy as
it does means it is a bug in nullmailer). If you disagree with
policy, and wish to change it, open ANOTHER, wishlist, bug against
policy, detailing the rationale and text of your proposed change.
