I am concerned about the impact these changes will have on interoperability with other machines in a heterogeneous environments. Are we facting in the negatives of doing things differently from everyone else into this decision? I had a number of questions about this, that I posted in the -policy mailing list; and there have been some answers. : Issues of concern: Do we have a consensus on a solution? is : this doable? How much impact would it have on compatibility? What is : the initial reaction to the proposal on the FHS lists? If we are going to go through with this transition, we'll have to defend our choice at several points, to several parties. I suggest the proponents of this change put together a central location (preferably a web site) with the arguments for this. I would suggest some starting points: a) The use case that motivate this proposal: The debian-devel mailing list, From: Thomas Hood <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Message-Id: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: /run/, resolvconf and read-only root I would also suggest expanding on these, and presenting a Rationale for each case. b) List of changes proposed, made, and to do: From: Thomas Hood <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Message-Id: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: /run/, resolvconf and read-only root c) List of changes in behaviour d) Impact on interoperability: how would administering a Debian box be different from administering any other Linux box? (based on c) e) List of negatives for the proposal, and a rebuttal. I suggest you ask the opponents for collaboration on this section.
