If you upgraded your Debian system to 3.0, you would be able to install KDE. For upgrading instructions, check http://www.debian.org/releases/stable/releasenotes In fact, kmail would be just one apt-get install kmail install :) Note also that this mailing list, debian-devel, is meant for development questions and not questions about using Debian.
