Bibtex isn't searching $TEXINPUTS for .bst files if $BSTINPUTS is empty. It goes directly to the system default .bst input directory (which is /usr/lib/texmf/bibtex/bst/). Debian 0.93R6 Kernel 1.2.13 Libc 4.6.27
