If you check syslog on your system you'll see that squid is failing
because of missing epoll() support in your kernel.
A kernel >= 2.6 with epoll support enabled is needed to run squid in
etch (see Bug#377697). This was stated in README.Debian and in Etch
Release Notes. Please upgrade your kernel.
