Package: Other
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

I'm currently running Sarge. Upon John Hasler's recommendation, I was
trying to upgrade to Etch. In preparation for this, I did an apt-get
update, followed by an apt-get upgrade, with my sources.list pointing
to a sarge repository. After that successfully completed, I changed
sources.list to point to an etch repository, did an apt-get update,
followed by an apt-get dist-upgrade. The dist-upgrade failed with the
following:

E: This installation run will require temporarily removing the
essential package e2fsprogs due to a Conflicts/Pre-Depends loop. This
is often bad, but if you really want to do it, activate the
APT::Force-LoopBreak option.
E: Internal Error, Could not early remove e2fsprogs

At the time I first encountered this error, I was running a 2.2
kernel. I have since upgraded to a 2.6 kernel. I was trying to force
an e2fsprogs install, and got a notification of libc (I think?)
requiring a 2.6 kernel, and the e2fsprogs install aborted.

I'm about to try to upgrade to etch again.

This indicates that you were not actually upgraded to sarge, because
upgrading from the sarge versions of e2fsprogs and libc6 does not give this
problem.

And this explains why. 2.2 kernel is *not* supported by sarge, and as a
result you appear to have been running a pre-sarge glibc, triggering this
error.

Thanks for reporting, but sorry, but I don't see anything to be fixed here.
