Thank you. I'd noticed the pipe but didn't realize it was the issue.
Based on the other bug, I've discovered that the work-around to start the
system is "tail -f /var/log/tomcat5.5/catalina.out" running somewhere while
tomcat5.5 starts.
I am using syslog-ng instead of regular syslog, in case that makes any
difference, and I end up with log files that have user tomcat55 and group
"nogroup."
