Package: kernel-package
Version: 10.065
Severity: serious
Justification: kernel policy

It seems that the configurable choice of the ramdisk generator, which we
discussed a year ago, has dissapeared. We reached the conclusion that it would
be configurable in kernel-img.conf, but i have looked at the man pages as well
as the source code, and could not find any way to do this.

Since when has this feature dissapeared in kernel-package, and if it has not,
why is it so undocumented ?

I notice :

initrd.mk: This snippet uses hard coded version based heuristics to
determine which set of tools would be viable for providing
an initrd or initramdisk for the kernel being built, if
initrd's are selected by the user as desired.

which doesn't seem to make any sense to me, especially the last sentence, and
which in general hints to me that this is not configurable anymore, but
hard-coded. The last sentence is contradictory, and may mean exactly the
contrary though.

In any case, no obvious documentation of this feature was found, and since the
kernel team in conjunction with the kernel-package maintainer and the various
ramdisk-generator maintainers decided that this should be configurable in
/etc/kernel-img.conf, this missing feature represents a serious violation of
the kernel packaging policy, thus the severity.

Friendly,

Sven Luther
