Anyway, I would not have considered your reopening the bug to be rude or inappropriate since you are in fact supplying additional helpful information that was not present the first time around. I have reopened the bug and will look into the problem more deeply, attempting to determine whether the problem is in libtiff or something else such as dpkg or apt. I can confirm that changing the doc directory to a link has happened since sarge, so I'll try doing the sarge to etch upgrade with that package and see what happens.
