ok I understand : it's coherent, it's just a strange and unpleasant behavior. Now, to test the effect of what you've just changed to the appearance, you have to restart kdm using /etc/init.d (and losing your session), starting a new session from the menu is not enough any more, very discouraging. But I still don't understand why you have to use the "override file".
