gtkpod does indeed conflict with libgpod >= 0.4, but libgpod 0.4 is NOT in debian, as noted elsewhere. I had no memory of installing it from anywhere but the debian repo, so I assumed that it was there. It was obviously a completely incorrect assumption on my part, sorry. I should give you guys more credit.
