Thanks for clarifying. I agree with the judgement - although frustrated
that it has caused netatalk to be dropped from Etch - I have only little
time on my hand, and the maintainer seems MIA :-(

Please file a separate bugreport about that issue, with some more details.

Personally I have not had problems there - but also must admit that I
use unofficial SSL-enabled rebuilds on all my servers...
