Do you have an example of a package actually in etch that suffers from this problem? In general, it's a bad idea for library packages to provide config files. If this is an issue of incorrect defaults in the library, it should set reasonable compiled-in defaults. If the problem is really that the compiled-in defaults don't work for these particular apps, then it should probably be the responsibility of those applications to override those defaults (with a config file or otherwise). I'm quite certain in any case that the last time I tested chromium, I had no sound problems; and I've just tested scorched3d as well, and it doesn't crash at all for me, it runs just fine. Are you using something other than the default sound driver on your system?
