Because it need a database server in the first place, the client is
needed only for setting up the database automatically. But you can
always choose to use a remote database server (even a proprietary one)
and you can do the db setup with a fancy GUI tool if you like that
more.

If you have ideas to improve the process while keeping it scalable (to
my knowledge, I'm the only one working on this currently), I'm open to
suggestions.

Just do not report bugs if you do not have time for deeper
investigations. Write a plain email to the maintainer or set up a
simple webpage with piuparts output.
