Hmmm. That directory only contains version 4.27 of update-inetd, which is
the same version as in the archives. Is that intentional?

I have just tested if the "new" version solves the problems during a new
installation when using the graphical installer. I'm afraid it does not.

I still get:
   Couldn't reopen stdin(/dev/tty): \
No such device or address at /usr/share/bin/update-inetd line 29.

The procedure I followed for the test was:
- take daily netinst d-i image
- boot with 'installgui priority=medium'
- proceed until "Select and install software"
- switch to VT2 (ctrl-alt-F2)
- chroot /target
- 'wget' new version of update-inetd & 'dpkg -i' that
this tells me: 4.27 is being replaced with 4.27...
- switch back to VT5
- start "Select and install software"
- select as tasks "standard" and "file server"

Cheers,
FJP
