If you think it best to remove giflib from Etch, that's perfectly fine with me. Probably a good idea, actually, given how outdated the code is. I'll still plan to NMU for the sake of the package in unstable, though (popcon says there are at least 319 users, with "vote" = 35 and "recent" = 9), if I don't hear from the maintainer.
