I didn't have one at the time of reporting the bug; I had run the postinst a few times by then and a previous iteration may have removed it (but then it shouldn't keep failing). Interestingly, I was running the upgrade from sudo ("sudo apt-get dselect-upgrade"); later I had occasion to be switched to root with su and the postinst ran ok. I don't know whether that's connected.
