The other related problem (that doesn't seem to rate a mention anywhere) is that package upgrades (e.g. stable to testing) can also break, especially upgrades that effect slapd.
1. stop slapd. 2. upgrade slapd. 3. install and configure other packages. 4. configure slapd. I have had hangs in step 3 because the LDAP server cannot be contacted because the upgrade process shut it down. Or something like that anyway. I can't remember the exact details right now :-(.
