Well, cursory inspection, e.g.
 for a in $(tpctl | sed 's/ *\[//;s/|.*//') ; do tpctl $a ; done
resulting in gazillions of complaints about /dev/thinkpad, seems to
suggest the latter.
I could be wrong.
